Feminism Discussion
It is ironic that it is 2016 and not much has changed other than some improvements. We have a Women's Day, thankfully. The subordination of women is deeply imbedded in social institutions such as the legal system, the workplace, the family, and religion. We have to fight for reproductive rights and it’s our own bodies. Some educational institutions encourage girls and women to pursue occupations in traditionally female areas rather than traditionally male areas. Unfortunately, women studies have not been integrated into mainstream education. Now women's studies has become part of the Academy that offers majors, minors, master degrees and doctorates. We women have bad reputations regardless of race. My African-American sisters are stereotyped as domineering head strong women, Jewish women are depicted as status-obsessed princesses, Asian and Latina women are depicted as docile, mysterious, and exotic. The American concepts of femininity include a combination of the Madonna or whore dichotomy. The Madonna has been presented as pure, selfless, and maternal while the whore has been presented as deceitful, dangerous, and sinful. A lot of men in different types of jobs think we should be servants and supermodels. We get paid less than a man does and we work just as hard as they do. We have to put up with men who don't take us seriously because of our gender. Men think we should be grateful that we are married with kids. What men don't realize is that being a wife and mother is an unpaid full-time job. It's just that they just don't appreciate what we have to go through. Do they have to carry a child for eight or nine months and having to go through painful labor and child word is very dangerous?Who do they think gets up and gets the kids ready for school? Do they think it is easy taking care of the kids and the house and the shopping? My father and I have been butting heads lately about feminism. My father he's kind of means well, but he can come off as insulting. He thinks just because I am a female means I am very intelligent. He pissed off a lot of ladies at his church because of his belief which came off as sexist and chauvinist. He kept telling them they should stay in their place or lane, which is kind of insulting on his part. My father keeps comparing me to my late mother, saying that she was 22 when she married him and had my older brother. I am an unemployed 22-year-old college student and I am not ready to have husband and children. I want to get married and have children one day, but I have nothing to show for it. I live with my father; I go to school full-time and I have a bank account that not even a broke college student would be impressed about. I like to read a lot of romance novels and he thinks that I'm impressionable enough to fall for the cheesy romance stuff. I'm not that naïve, I mean half the stuff is men treating me like crap and tries to get with her. the other stuff is that the female is willing to go back to the guy who hurt her. There are also stuff about women going for the worst guy for them over the guy who would treat you right. I mean it's kind of sad that there are women who go for guys who live off of them. I would prefer and wish that a lot of romance novels we're actually more realistic and empowers women. Why can't half of the women in romance novels be strong women who doesn't take crap from men and make better choices. My mother was sometimes a strong and harsh woman who didn't like to see me cry and often punish me for it. Ironically, she was emotional too which is where I got it from. I really don't like fictional female characters like Olivia Pope from Scandal. She gives black people and women a bad name. She is supposed to be the one who fixes scandals and prevent them for VIPs like the president or senators. I had to stop watching Scandal since it disgusted me so much. she kept going for only white guys but that didn't bother me too much since half my family are biracial or into interracial relationships. Pope slept with the president, a married man who has a self-absorbed. scheming wife and kids. His wife had the nerve Pope for her husband back like he was a sweater or something. I wish that sometimes men treated us like equals and not someone who's fragile and delicate who can't do anything for herself. Partially, I think men are a bunch of hypocrites who do exact bad stuff women do. Why can't there be more movies like GI Jane or any inspirational movie about a strong woman? Now the media is making us look like ratchets and worse. It's like the media is making us worship Kim Kardashian and Amber Rose. When will men learn that we are not so different?
